Guinea-Bissau: Election of the new President of the Supreme Court of Justice

Supreme Court Justice Arafam Mané was elected on May 16, 2025, as President of the Supreme Court, replacing António Lima André, who retired last April. He will serve a four-year term.
Arafam Mané, 54, a law graduate from the Lusíada University of Lisbon, Portugal, was previously Vice-President of the Supreme Court.
Among a panel of 19 electoral judges, Mané received 12 votes, while his opponent, Judge Aimadu Sauané, received 7 votes.
The President of the Electoral Commission, General and jurist Sandji Fati, stated that there were no invalid votes, blank votes, or abstentions.
After being proclaimed the new President of the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau, Arafam Mané declared that it was a clean and far-sighted process and that his election represents a path toward change in Guinea-Bissau's judicial system.
Mané also stated that his election "is that of the magistrates, by the magistrates, and for justice" and promised to work with everyone to unify the Guinean judicial sector.
It should be noted that the process of validating candidates for the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for November 23 will be managed by the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau, which also serves as the Constitutional Court.
The Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau is a founding member of the CJCA since its creation on May 9, 2011, in Algiers.
