Ethiopia: Appointment of a new Chief Justice

Hon. Judge Tewodros Mihret Kebede was appointed on January 17, 2023, as President of the Supreme Court and Constitutional Council of Inquiry of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

The House of Peoples' Representatives reviewed and approved the nominations proposed by Prime Minister FDRE, Abiy Ahmed.

Thus, Tewodros Mehret Kebede was appointed President of the Federal Supreme Court, while Mrs. Abeba Embiale Mengiste was also appointed Vice-President of the Federal Supreme Court.

Candidates appeared before the session of parliament and were sworn in.

Ato Tewodros was a teacher and lecturer at Addis Ababa University Law School before accepting his new position. He was also the President of the Ethiopian Association of Legal Professionals.

It should be noted that the former Chief Justice Mrs. Maeza Schenafi as well as her Vice-President have resigned from their post.

The Supreme Court and Constitutional Council of inquiry of Ethiopia has been a member of the CJCA since 2016.
